Extreme Candy from Japan

It's a wild world out there, with candy to match. Sweets from Japan are cool and sometimes mysterious!

For example, there are the offerings from one of the most fearless candy makers in the world, the Japanese candy company "Popin' Cookin." Here's an example of this company's fine products:

We're not even sure what this is, although there's the disturbing possibility that it involves a candy panda head. Anyway, there's a manic energy shooting out of this product that we really like. And there's more! Here's Popin' Cookin's sushi candy factory:

Yah! Candy sushi isn't cool enough -- Popin' Cookin' made it DIY! The Popin' Cookin' candy sushi factory may be the coolest, most extreme candy item we've come across in a long time.

And then, for those of us who really want to go all-out and try as much Japanese candy and snacks as we can, there are many amazing Japanese candy variety gift boxes out there that have a little bit of everything. This one is spectacular -- everything from local favorites to the most popular Japanese sweets.

Most of these have shifting variety of items depending on availability, but you can be pretty sure that you're getting a wide variety of the most popular and well-loved Japanese candies on the market. From Pocky to seaweed crisps, if you're adventurous you'll find something here to love.

Extreme Candy -- Toxic Waste Candy

What Is In Toxic Waste Candy?

You are looking at a leaky drum of the nastiest, sourest, most-face-shrinking candy in the entire world. It's Toxic Waste, aka "Hazardously Sour Candy," and it's on our list of the most extreme candy in the world.

Toxic Waste, and other sour candies, get their sourness from a high dose of acid (no, not that kind of acid!). The candy is full of citric acid and related substances that make Toxic Waste so overpowering.

According to the good folks at Livestrong.com, sour candy gets its punch from an assortment of acidic food additives. They are:

  • Citric Acid -- First isolated from lemon juice by a Swedish chemist in 1784, citric acid can be found in a wide variety of foods, including ice cream and soda.

  • Malic Acid -- This stuff is extremely tart, and comes from unripe fruit. If you've ever bitten into an unripe apple, you've felt the sting of malice acid. As a food additive, it's used in vinegar-flavored chips, among other things.

  • Tartaric Acid -- Tartaric Acid is found naturally in tangerines, grapes and coffee beans. I remember tasting a little of the "cream of tartar" from my mom's spice rack when I was a kid. Sounded tasty -- wasn't! One of the sourest substances out there.

  • Lactic Acid -- This is an acidic substance found in milk. Are you a fan of sour milk? Then you love lactic acid.

  • Fumeric Acid -- Fumeric acid "provides more sourness per unit weight than" any other acidic food additive, according to the Bartek Ingredients food company. Careful with this stuff! You can be pretty sure that extreme sour candy like Toxic Waste is loaded with it.

If you're still determined to get a mouthful of this extreme candy, you might want to consider this:

Extreme Candy -- Ghost Pepper Gummies

The Hottest Peppers on
Earth...

These are ghost peppers, known in Asia as bhut jolokia. They are widely known as the hottest pepper in the world. Some varieties, such as the "chocolate" ghost pepper, and the Jamaican 3-Pot (named because just one can turn three big pots of stew fiery-hot), claim to be hotter, but the ghost pepper has a legitimate claim to "world's hottest pepper."

So it makes sense that the extreme candy with the reputation as the world's hottest uses the ghost pepper as a main ingredient. In fact, the featured sweet today is a candy version of the ghost pepper -- we're talking, kids, about the super-hot ghost pepper gummies marketed by the Sonoran Spice Company. These bad boys look a little like the actual bhut jolokia pepper, and they are technically candy, but they pack a serious capsaicin punch.

Packed in a styro "butcher's tray," ghost pepper gummies arrive with little fanfare. They're plain red gummie peppers, with no bells or whistles, or warning labels. But everything containing ghost peppers demands to be taken seriously! Try them first, before springing them on an unsuspecting friend.

There are other candies that use the ghost pepper as an ingredient, including some of the spiciest chocolate on the planet, and we'll talk about those in future posts.
